Zur Erforschung kultureller Identität hat anna.laclaque das internationale, partizipative Projekt Interference of IDENTITIES ins Leben gerufen. Es bringt Konflikte von Frauen zwischen Mutterschaft und Selbstverwirklichung in ihrer jeweiligen Kultur zur Sprache. Dafür werden Frauen aus verschiedenen Ländern der Welt eingeladen, ein Wiegenlied in ihrer Muttersprache zu singen und davon ein Video mit ihrem Smartphone aufzunehmen. Das Singen eines Wiegenliedes steht hier für einen universellen Topos der Menschheit. anna.laclaque sammelt das Videomaterial, lernt selbst jedes Lied und nimmt es in der gleichen Form auf. Zusätzlich beantwortet jede Frau in einem weiteren Video Fragen zur Rolle der Frau und Mutter in ihrem Land.

Video-Installation
Die während des Projektes entstandenen Videos bilden das Material für die Video-Klang-Installation IDENTITIES. Individuelle Gesichter und Stimmen werden durch Videoschnitt miteinander verwoben und in einer Video-Sound-Skulptur gegenübergestellt, um kulturübergreifende Elemente der Mutterschaft zu identifizieren. Der Rhythmus der Videoinstallation entsteht durch den Wechsel von Sprache, einzelnen Gesängen und heterogener Vielstimmigkeit. Eine verbindende Struktur entsteht durch das Gesicht und die Gesangsstimme von anna.laclaque, die alle Wiegenlieder selbst nachsingt. Die Installation mündet in ein optisches und akustisches Verschmelzen der Identitäten.

In my culture, the mother is called the light of the house,
because she always gives the unlimited love and attention
to the family members. She is the one, who spends lots of
time with the children and has actually an important role in
building the personality and emotions of the children.

In Mexico, the woman began little by little to free herself
from a patriarchal system and take a presence in various
jobs and professions, there was the opportunity that some
women were professionals. I want to emphasize that my
mother was one of the few women who had a profession in
those years, she was a teacher for 40 years. My
grandmother was also a working woman, she worked in
graphic arts. Since I was little, it was clear to me that I did
not want to be a mother, I wanted to travel and study arts.
I am fortunate, since I dedicate myself to what I like: that’s
art, and art takes me to know different countries.
Ruth, Mexico
There is a plethora of differences in terms of sacrifices and
time-management while raising children here in India as
compared to abroad. Unlike various places abroad where
there is a possibility to take the support from day-care
centres, India hardly has any dedicated day-care system at
least for the common public. A mother needs to take almost
all the basic responsibilities to raise her child here in India.
This surely comes at the cost of a mother’s career in most
of the cases. I am not an exception either. A child itself is
never a problem in fulfilling one’s own dreams. I felt a sense
of fulfilment and pride to have my child. From then
onwards, there was no looking back.

Our chinese tradition features that the men earn money
while the women look after home. This is however changed,
in modern times. Man and woman contribute more or less
equally to both. We love to have children. It appears to me
like a magic, and like a sense of achievement, that after the
end of my life, my blood remains in the world and continues
to feel and create. We moved to Germany and afterwards
decided to stay here longer, mainly due to the wish that our
children can have a childhood with less stress.

Wenn ich Kinder hätte, müsste ich die völlige Freiheit und
Unabhängigkeit, die ich habe, aufgeben. Dann würde ich
meine ganze Zeit und Aufmerksamkeit den Kindern widmen
und mich möglicherweise verlieren. Ich habe keine
Verbindung zu irgendeinem Schlaflied. Ich habe es nie für
jemanden gesungen und niemand hat es jemals für mich
gesungen.

Die meisten Mütter in Frankreich sind berufstätig und
versuchen Beruf und Kinder zu vereinen. Ich denke, dass
Kinder immer eine Bereicherung sind, weil sie immer das
Unvorhersehbare tun und weil das Leben mit Kindern
bunter, lustiger und abenteuerlicher wird.

I’ve always wanted to have children. As someone who is
pregnant with her first child now, I’m still very much in a
discovery process. So far I know they change your priorities
and shift your focus. I think it’s important not to lose
yourself in motherhood, you have to be true to yourself and
persue your passions.

My children give color and taste to my life. I can’t imagine
my life without them. It is very difficult to have children and
carrier. Especially for me as a foreigner I have no support
from my parents here to take care of the children for one or
two hours and I have no free time for me. But I don’t want
to complain about that, because when they play and laugh,
all these difficult parts go away quickly.

After my second child I was very lost, I had a postnatal
depression and it was very difficult for me to find out who I
was besides being a mother and how to represent this role
in society. It was difficult to have that mental space to find
myself.

Mother is the fountain of love. This love is beyond of
comparison with anything else in the world. Being a mother
starts with being pregnant, with maintaining a life for nine
month. And eventually giving birth to a child with the risk of
losing her own life. And this is actually a big sacrifice.
